First steps: How to Choose a Floorball Stick

Writer: Alessio CasamassimaAlessio Casamassima

In the beginning, all players faced this dilemma: Which floorball stick is right for me and how do I figure it out? There are many factors that influence the choice of a cue, but for your first purchase, only two are important: the direction and the length.

Unihockey sticks are not all the same and it doesn't matter if you are left-handed or right-handed.

To decide, first try holding a cue in your hand and closing your eyes. The verse you choose will be the one you feel most comfortable with. Also try making shots and passes: if you are comfortable in both directions, remember: if you are right-handed and choose a left-handed paddle you will have more control, but less power; if you choose the right side the shots will be more powerful.

Floorball stick: hand position

  • Shooting LEFT means keeping your LEFT hand on the club lower than your right hand and the club is on the LEFT side of your body.

  • Shooting RIGHT means you have your RIGHT hand on the club lower than your left hand and the club is on the RIGHT side of your body.

The correct stick length

  • The length of the floorball stick is measured in centimeters. The size of the cue refers to the length of the rod alone.

  • The stick should be held in front of you, with the paddle resting on the floor, the stick should reach approximately 6 cm above the navel.

  • A shorter cue provides better ball control, but a longer cue gives better reach.

  • Ball control can be more difficult if the club is too long. Playing with a cue that is too short could put strain on your back.

  • Floorball sticks are designed to be used most effectively when the correct length is chosen.

Numbers and floorball sticks

Floorball cues come in two sets of sizes. The smaller measurement refers only to the barrel, while the larger measurement is the overall length of the barrel and headstock. The measurement that is usually used is the smallest number. For example, if a stick is labeled 96/107 cm, it is considered to be a 96 cm stick. Above is a table with the recommended stick length for each player's height.

For more experienced players

If you have been playing for some time and want to increase your confidence with this sport, then the time has come to move on to a more professional stick, which you can choose by paying attention to other important characteristics.

Floorball brand

Salming, Oxdog, Unihoc etc etc many brands, each with unique and exclusive characteristics. The most important brands offer the possibility of customizing the rod/pallet pair thanks to a wide variety of lines.

Floorball blades

The beginners' poles are equipped with a very large pre-bend. Better players generally prefer less pronounced curvatures. Then they take care of shaping the headstock as desired, as described here.

Curvature is measured from the heel of the paddle to the tip: a flatter paddle is better for passing, while a curved blade is better for shooting.

The cavity is the curvature of the headstock from top to bottom. Hollower blades give better ball control but can affect the speed of rallies.

Rigidity or flexibility?

There are many different types of floorball paddles available, varying in shape and stiffness. A stiffer paddle will increase shot power while a softer one will help with ball control and feel.

The stiffness of the rod is another important factor. The lower the number indicated, the stiffer the shaft. Competitive players prefer a stiffer cue for harder, more accurate shots. To determine the right flex, the weight of the player is considered: the more you weigh and the stronger the shot, the stiffer the club should be.

Shape and type of handle

Oval or round, the choice of handle shape strictly depends on personal preferences. Higher-end poles come with more advanced sweat-proof grips that provide different types of tactile sensations with more grip or softness.
